Iowa Finishes 4th at Fighting Irish Classic, Sets School Record

SOUTH BEND, Indiana —The University of Iowa men’s golf team set a school record en route to a fourth place finish at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic. The Hawkeyes finished the 54-hole tournament with a school record score of 833 (-19) at the par-71 (7,020 yards) Warren Golf Course. Iowa carded a 277 in Monday’s final round, matching Sunday’s first round total that equals the sixth lowest 18-hole score in program history.
 
No. 29 Illinois claimed the team title with a three-round score of 808 (-44). Georgia Southern (818; -34) finished second and No. 48 North Carolina (821; -31) finished in third. The Hawkeyes finished ahead of in-state rival Iowa State, Notre Dame, and four other Big Ten schools (Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Nebraska).

Junior Alex Schaake moved up five spots on the individual leaderboard to earn his team-leading third top-10 finish of the season, tying for seventh with a career-best 54-hole score of 203 (-10). Schaake’s 54-hole total of 203 established a new school record. The Omaha native posted a 67 (-4), his team leading eighth round at or below par this season in today’s final round, which tied for the fifth lowest 18-hole school in school history.

Junior Benton Weinberg fired his third straight round at or below par in the final round with an 18-hole score of 70 (-1). He earned his first top-20 finish of the season, tying for 13th, with a career-best 54-hole score of 205 (-8). Weinberg’s 205 ties Raymond Knoll for the second lowest 54-hole school in school history.

Freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero finished with a personal-best 54-hole score of 213 (E), tying for 34th. Senior Matthew Walker carded an eagle on par-five fifth to soar 18 spots on the individual leaderboard today carding a 68 (-3). He finished tied for 34th with a three-round score of 213 (E).

Redshirt junior Alex Moorman tied for 57th with a three-round score of 218 (+5).

  • Gonzalo Leal Montero’s par-five scoring average of 4.22 (-7) was fifth best.
