IOWA CITY, Iowa — For the second time in as many years, University of Iowa sophomore Spencer Lee made the trip to Des Moines to be recognized at the State Capitol for winning the 125-pound bracket at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Lee was honored Tuesday with resolutions from the House and Senate chambers of the Iowa State Legislature.
“Everyone knows how hard it is to repeat, and he fought adversity and fought through the NCAA and came out on top again,” said Representative Dave Jacoby, who hosted the House resolution for the second straight year. “It is so exciting to have him here for a second year, and I don’t want to jinx anything, but next year I hope to host a resolution for his third consecutive title.”
Lee was escorted to the hill by head coach Tom Brands, and because the visit coincided with Hawkeye Caucus Day, University of Iowa president Bruce Harreld was able to join the celebration.
“Spencer is such a star on campus,” Harreld said. “It is not just what he does on the mat, it’s what he does all across campus. We have so many student-athletes that are just that way. They are exceptional leaders on campus, wonderful grade point averages, and great human beings. That’s the reason I’m here today. It’s not so much about the wrestlers, it’s about the humans.”
Lee posed for photos with legislators, signed autograph for Capitol guests, and enjoyed the Hawkeye flavor that had taken over the rotunda floor.
“I love seeing black and gold here at the Capitol,” Lee said. “We never take this for granted and I am honored to be here. I have to say thank you for allowing me to be here for the second consecutive year and hopefully we will see this Capitol building a lot more. I hope we bring a lot more people here next year.”
