COLLEGE PARK, Maryland — The sixth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team dropped its contest at No. 2 Maryland, 3-0 on Friday. The Hawkeyes boast an overall record of 9-3 (3-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawkeyes and Terrapins began their top-10 matchup heavily contested, both teams putting up two shots and one shot on goal in the first period. Iowa nearly captured it’s first goal on a corner, which was waved off by the referee. Maryland got off a shot that was quickly blocked as the end of the first period.
Maryland opened scoring with a goal in the 18th minute from Madison Maguire. Iowa put off three shots on goal in the second period, but the Terrapins’ defense held until the siren called for halftime.
The third period was a back and forth battle, forcing both teams up and down the pitch out of halftime. The Terrapins upped the score, 2-0, with a goal from Taylor Mason. Madison Maguire scored the final goal of the match in the 57th minute, rounding out scoring 3-0.
NOTABLES
- Seven Hawkeyes put up a shot on goal, and collectively tallied 12 shots. Junior Maddy Murphy three total shots, the most by a Hawkeye today.
- Both teams had three penalty corners, neither team was able to capitalize.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Grace McGuire recorded three saves.
