NORMAN, Okla. – University of Iowa junior Danielle Burich advanced to the main draw at the ITA Central Regional Championships by winning a pair of singles matches on Thursday.
In the first round of singles, Burich defeated Erin Epperson from Saint Louis University in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In the second round of singles, Burich again won in straight sets beating Madison Gallegos of the University of Nebraska – Omaha, 6-2, 6-3.
Burich will join sophomore Michelle Bacalla, junior Ashleigh Jacobs, and senior Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell in the main draw.
After falling in the first round of qualifying, freshman Erika Dodridge and junior Danielle Bauers bounced back to win in the consolation round. Dodridge bested Nebraska-Omaha’s Savanna Crowell, 6-2, 6-1. Bauers defeated Minnesota’s Isabella Lambert, 6-1, 6-3.
“We always expect to qualify for main draw so it’s tough to miss on that for a couple kids today,” said head coach Sasha Schmid. “I am happy for Danielle Burich getting two solid wins to advance to main draw tomorrow. No doubt tomorrow will be a great day of competitive tennis for everyone.”
The Hawkeyes continue action Friday at 8 a.m. (CT).
