LONG BEACH, Calif. — University of Iowa junior Laulauga Tausaga earned the Hawkeyes’ fourth and fifth school records of the weekend at the Beach Invitational on Saturday.

Tausaga, a Spring Valley, California, native, bettered the previous discus school record that she set two weeks ago with her throw of 62.28 meters (204-4) to win the Beach Invitational by nearly half a meter. She followed up discus with an 18.02-meter (59-01 1/2) shot put to break the record she set at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships, tying for first with Alyssa Wilson from UCLA.

“Competing in both disc and shot in the same day is difficult because you start the day off early and have to sit at a track meet and rewarm up for the second event later that day,” Tausaga said. “It’s difficult to get the adrenaline pumping and refocus. Your body has already been used and you have to trick yourself into feeling fresh so that you can at least produce something rewarding. I was able to get into that mindset and leave one out on the field.

“It means so much, and it opened my eyes to what can be done. I’ve had the toughest shot season so far, and I came out and hit a huge one and I couldn’t hold back the tears.”

Freshman Raymonte Dow added another win for the Hawkeyes in the 400-meter hurdles, running a personal best 41.79.

The Hawkeyes performed well throughout the day with three additional personal bests from sophomores Josh Braverman in the 110-meter hurdles (14.10), Cooper Koenig in the long jump (7.25 meters, 23-9 1/2).

Senior Mar’yea Harris was the second collegian to finish the 400 meters in 45.92, his second fastest race of the season. Juniors Amanda Carty and Hannah Schilb both finished in the top eight of a 49-person triple jump field. Carty jumped 12.47 meters (40-11) and Schilb jumped 12.14 meters (39-10). Sophomore Antonise Christian also tied her career best 200 meters (24.48) with a wind aid of 2.3.

The Hawkeyes are back on the road next week, competing at the Drake relays Thursday-Saturday. Ticket information is linked on hawkeyesports.com/trackschedule.
