IOWA CITY, Iowa — The NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) report for 2017-18 revealed that – for the ninth consecutive year – all of Iowa’s 24 sports programs were well above the 930 threshold that signals a red flag with respect to academic progress. The highlights of results for the UI’s student-athletes include:

  • Men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s gymnastics, rowing, and soccer all scored a perfect single year score of 1,000.

  • All 24 of the University of Iowa’s athletic programs achieved no lower than a 950 multiyear rate.

  • Twelve Hawkeye teams are at or above the national average of 983 (women’s cross country, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s gymnastics, women’s gymnastics, rowing, soccer, softball, women’s swimming & diving, women’s tennis, women’s track & field, and volleyball).

  • Thirteen Hawkeye teams (men’s basketball, men’s cross country, football, men’s golf, women’s gymnastics, rowing, soccer, softball, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, women’s tennis, women’s track & field, and wrestling) earned a score at or above their multiyear APR score from last year.

Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its APR each academic year, similar to a report card. Scholarship student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. As tracked through the APR, more than 14,000 former college athletes have returned to school to get their degrees since the NCAA created the measurement tool. Each of those students earns back a lost APR point for their team. Each of those graduates earned APR points for their team.
