IOWA CITY, Iowa — The seventh-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team took No. 2 Duke to double overtime on Sunday at Grant Field, losing 2-1 after a sudden victory goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Devils took the lead in the third period, scoring in the 41st minute. Freshman Hannah Miller recorded her first goal of the match unassisted.

Iowa retaliated in the 48th minute with a corner goal from sophomore Anthe Nijziel, tying the match 1-1. This goal forced overtime.

In sudden victory-second overtime, Duke’s Hannah Miller shot an unassisted goal to seal the victory in the 74th minute.

“Today’s game against Duke are highlights because we were reasonably successful during the first 60 minutes, where our connectivity and our passing were the best we’ve done this year,” junior Maddy Murphy said. “This season we haven’t had that type of connection, and it was great to see all our movement come together. If we play like that we’re going to kill it in the Big Ten.”

On today’s matchup against No. 2 Duke…
“They did everything we asked them to do and more. We knew they could play like that, and we’ve shown it multiple times already this season when we played No. 1 North Carolina. It’s a shame we didn’t come up with the win. We felt like we had them on the ropes there and we just needed to finish.”

On who stood out in today’s match…
“Everyone that played stood out, but Katie Birch was unbelievable today. Getting hit in the face and coming back out and being able to not sub off that entire overtime period showed a lot of grit. Maddy Murphy, Anthe Nijziel in the back was a stud who came up big with a lot of tackles. I was happy with everyone today.”

On how this performance will motivate the team this season…
“We just told the team this has to fuel them going forward. That’s the number two team in the country and we had them in double overtime. We know the brand of hockey that we can play, and we just have to go back to work on Tuesday and be able to bring that same level of energy and replicate it.”
