CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Seniors Alex Schaake and Benton Weinberg carded first-round 69s (-3) to put the University of Iowa men’s golf team in second place after day one of the Golfweek Conference Challenge  on Sunday at the par-72, 7,086-yard Cedar Rapids Country Club.

Iowa fired a season-best five-under-par (283) in the first round and trail tournament-leading Ball State by only four strokes. All five Hawkeyes in the lineup finished the first round inside the top-32 of the 93-man tournament.

“Getting off to a good start helps a lot,” head coach Tyler Stith said. “It’s good for our confidence and we know what kind of team we are. (It was nice to be) at home playing at a golf course where we know where to miss and we’re comfortable. It’s nice to be in contention heading into tomorrow.”

Schaake hit all 18 greens in regulation and used five birdies to fire his second 69 (-3) of the season to tie for sixth place. Weinberg also recorded five birdies, including three straight to finish the front nine, to record a season-best 69 (-3).

“Those were big to finish the front nine on,” Weinberg said. “You want to get under par through nine and being able to birdie two of some of the harder holes on the course.”

Freshman Matthew Garside birdied the first three holes in his Hawkeye debut and is tied for 19th with an even-par 72. Sophomore Gonzalo Leal Montero and junior Joe Kim are tied for 32nd after day one at one-over-par (73).
