Minneapolis, Minn. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team picked up one doubles win and three singles wins on the first day of the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis on Friday.
In the first round of doubles play juniors Danielle Bauers and Ashleigh Jacobs beat Iowa State’s Maty Cancini and Christin Hsieh, 6-1. Freshman Erika Dodridge partnered with Junior Danielle Burich, falling to Minnesota’s Tina Kreinis and Lucia De Santa Ana 7-5.
In the second round of doubles play Burich and Dodridge lost to Iowa State’s Margarita Timakova and Chie Kezuka 6-4. Bauers and Jacobs lost their match to Minnesota’s Cammy Frei and Ekin Ercetin 6-4.
Jacobs in Draw A lost her first-round matchup with Kreinis from Minnesota, 6-1, 6-0. Also in Draw A Sophomore Cloe Ruette lost to Hsieh.
In Draw B, Burich defeated Liza Petushkova from Drake 6-3, 7-5.
In Draw C, Bauers won her first singles match of the day versus Iowa State’s Timakova 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2.
In Draw D Dodridge defeated Kim Zizek of Northern Iowa in the first round of singles play 6-2, 6-1.
“It was so good for us to get back on the court competing today,” said Iowa head coach Sasha Schmid. “We have a lot to build on from today in both our doubles and singles play. It was great to see Erika have a good first day as a Hawkeye.”
The Hawkeyes continue action Saturday at 9 a.m. (CT).
