Murphy, Trattner Join Iowa’s All-Time 10K List at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – University of Iowa track and field freshman Max Murphy and sophomore Nick Trattner ran the fourth and sixth-fastest 10,000-meter races in program history, late Friday night at the Stanford Invite at Cobb Track in Stanford, California.

Murphy became the fifth Hawkeye in program history to run sub-29 minutes in the 10K race (28:57.96). His time placed him fourth on Iowa’s all-time list.

“Max had a tremendous 10K debut last night,” associate head coach Randy Hasenbank said. “I have been bringing distance runners out here for many years, and you can always count on the weather. This is what happens when hard work and opportunity meet. He took advantage of the pristine conditions and posted a big mark. I am hopeful that it will be a regional-qualifying time.”

Trattner’s time (29:39.83) clocked in at No. 6 in Iowa history.

“Nick is quietly becoming one of the best distance runners in program history as well,” Hasenbank said.

Freshman Amber Aesoph ran a personal-best in the 1,500 meters by over two seconds (4:27.22) on Friday, and all four Hawkeye women who competed in the 5,000 meters ran personal-best times (Kelli Tosic, 17:02.03; Emma Gordon, 17:04.65; Brooke McKee, 17:21.59; Micah Poellet, 17:42.45).

Aesoph competed in the 800 meters Saturday afternoon and won her section with a big move down the backstretch on the second lap. Aesoph went wide, passing multiple competitors before holding off the field with a career-best time (2:09.56).

“I thought Amber had a great day today in the 800-meter race,” Hasenbank said. “She ran away from the field the last 250 meters. While she had a career best in the 1,500 last night, I think she would tell you that is a race she would like to have back.  Once she gets fully engaged in that 1,500 from the start, she will run very fast”.

Sophomore Kal Lewis also ran the 800 meters Saturday afternoon and finished fourth in his section (1:53.40).

The Hawkeyes travel to Arizona next weekend and will split between the Jim Click Invitational in Tucson and the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe.
