4 Hawkeyes to Compete at 2022 Senior Nexus Championship

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Four University of Iowa field hockey student-athletes – Annika Herbine, Jacey Wittel, Mia Magnotta and Olivia Frazier – will compete at the 2022 Senior Nexus Championship, which will be held at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, from July 17-22.

Herbine and Wittel will begin their sophomore seasons with the Hawkeyes in 2022, Mia Magnotta will be a redshirt freshman and Frazier is in her first season after transferring from Richmond.

Formerly known as the Young Women’s National Championship, the Senior NXC is held annually and features 144 elite high school, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes. During the spring and early summer, athletes trialed and trained at one of the seven USA Field Hockey High Performance Centers throughout the country for an opportunity to be selected to the Senior NXC, a step along the Olympic Development Pathway program. All athletes that were previously on the Rise, U-21, Development and Senior U.S. Women’s National Team were also included within the selection.

The event will start with a team training session on Sunday, July 17 with games starting on Monday, July 18. The opportunity to be selected for the 2022-23 U.S. Women’s National Team and Junior USWNT Selection Camps are at stake.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the best field hockey players in the country come together at Virginia Beach,” said Greg Drake, USWNT Head Coach. “This selection event is an important part of ensuring that the U.S. Women’s National Team continues to grow and improve.”
