IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team fell to Iowa State, 9-5, on Saturday night at Pearl Field in a nine-inning exhibition. Freshman Kelsey Winters got the start in the circle for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa State started the game strong, scoring three runs on three hits and one error in the top of the first inning. The Cyclones were able to plate one more in the top of the second to extend their lead to 3-0. The Hawkeyes were able to respond in the bottom half of the second with a two RBI single off the bat of senior Nia Carter. The Cyclones added on one more in the third to make the score 5-2.
Over the next five innings, the Hawkeyes were able to get seven baserunners, but were unable to bring them in.
Fifth year Breanna Vasquez came into the game in the fourth and kept Iowa State off the board until the eighth inning. In the inning, the Cyclones were able to plate three more runs to extend their lead, 8-2. In the home half of the eighth, freshman Anna Streff scored on a sac fly to cut the deficit to five.
Iowa State was able to plate another run in the top of the ninth on a sac fly, making it 9-3. In the ninth, Iowa was able to plate two on a fielder’s choice from sophomore Emma Henderson, followed by a sac fly from sophomore Anna Henderson.
The Hawkeyes finished the game with five runs on nine hits and two errors. Iowa used a combination of five different pitchers throughout the game.
Iowa returns to action tomorrow afternoon at Bob Pearl Field as they host Drake in the final game of the Big Four Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. Admission is free.
