THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s tennis team travels to Eugene, Oregon, this weekend to compete at the Student Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Oregon. The Hawkeyes will challenge Oregon on Friday at 3 p.m. (CT), followed by Saint Mary’s on Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT).
ON IOWA
The Hawkeyes went undefeated last weekend in their home matches against Denver and Kansas State, improving to 3-1 on the spring season. Iowa opened the weekend against Denver, winning 5-2 after securing the doubles point courtesy of Marisa Schmidt/Anya Lamoreaux and Vipasha Mehra/Daianne Hayashida. Schmidt, Mannix, and Hayashida all notched singles wins in straight sets. Pokorna won her singles match in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). On Sunday, the Hawkeyes bounced KSU, 4-1, with Mannix/Kranholdt clinching the doubles point in a tiebreaker. Schmidt, Mannix, and Pokorna all recorded singles wins against the Wildcats.
DOUBLES TEAM RANKED
The doubles team of Anya Lamoreaux and Vipasha Mehra enter the spring season ranked No. 45 nationally.
FORMER HAWKEYE RETURNS
Former Hawkeye Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell was hired in December as assistant coach. Van Heuvelen Treadwell joins the Hawkeye coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach at Delaware since January 2022. She began her coaching career the Fall 2021 semester as a volunteer assistant coach with the Hawkeyes.
Van Heuvelen Treadwell concluded her Hawkeye career in the spring of 2021, as one of the most decorated women’s tennis student-athletes in Iowa and Big Ten history. Achieving an individual rank within the top-100 nationally in both singles and doubles, Van Heuvelen Treadwell ranks second all-time at Iowa with 180 combined wins. She was named first-team All-Big Ten five times and was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2017.
In her final year, Van Heuvelen Treadwell earned the ITA Central Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The East Sussex, England, native was also named the ITA Central Regional Senior Player of the Year in 2020 and was the ITA Summer National Doubles Champion in 2019.
SCOUTING OREGON
• Oregon is 3-2 overall, dropping matches to No. 14 Oklahoma State (4-0) and Kansas (4-0).
• Iowa leads the all-time series against Oregon, 3-2.
• Head coach Courtney Nagle is in her fifth season at Oregon. Nagle was an assistant coach at Iowa from 2012-14.
• Six of the nine Ducks are international players (five juniors; one sophomore).
SCOUTING SAINT MARY’S
• Saint Mary’s (1-0) opened their season with a win over Martin Luther.
• The Cardinals have yet to face the Hawkeyes, making this their first meeting.
• Seven of the nine Cardinals are upperclassmen (three seniors; four juniors).
• Saint Mary’s head coach Jeff Halber is in his 24th season as the head men and women’s tennis coach.
