IOWA CITY, Iowa – Four University of Iowa women’s tennis student-athletes – sophomore Daianne Hayashida, sophomore Pia Kranholdt, junior Barbora Pokorna and junior Marisa Schmidt – have been named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selections, it was announced Tuesday by the CSC.
It is the second straight year Schmidt has earned the distinction.
To be eligible for the award, nominees must have a 3.5 GPA and completed one full calendar year at their current institution and is at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Nominees must also be a starter or important reserve to the team and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
Hayashida advances to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 4 (women) and June 5 (men).
Hayashida and Kranholdt are both double majors in psychology and sport and recreation management. Pokorna is a double major in international relations and Spanish with a minor in communication studies, while Schmidt is studying finance.
On the court, Hayashida and Pokorna tied for the team lead with 16 singles victories. Hayashida, the team’s No. 1 singles player, earned All-Big Ten recognition. Schmidt had a 13-5 dual record, including a 12-1 mark at No. 2 singles and Kranholdt had a team-high 16 doubles victories.
The Hawkeyes finished the 2023-24 season with an 11-12 overall and 6-5 Big Ten record, tying for sixth in the league standings.
