Hawkeyes Set to Compete in Purdue Fall Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is set to compete in the Purdue Fall Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Sunday at Kampen-Cosler Course.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
The 54-hole tournament tees off on Sunday with 36 holes and finishes on Monday with the final 18 holes. Tee Times are to be determined.

THE FIELD
15 schools will be competing in the Purdue Fall Invitational and the field includes Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Southern Illinois, Toledo, Wisconsin, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa, Northern Illinois, VCU, Western Kentucky, Marquette, Butler, Purdue,  Purdue Fort Wayne.

THE COURSE
The Kampen-Cosler Course, a Pete Dye design, is an 18-hole, links-style, par-72 championship golf course featuring large bent-grass greens, fairways and tees. The layout presents a challenge for golfers of all abilities with vast sand bunkers, native grasslands, ponds and a natural celery bog. Kampen-Cosler offers five sets of tees with the championship tees playing over 7,400 yards.

Kampen-Cosler is rated one of the top collegiate courses in the nation and has been awarded 4.5 stars on Golf Digest’s “Places to Play.” Kampen-Cosler receives high marks as it is ranked as one of the most difficult golf courses in Indiana.

The course has also played host to a number of prestigious collegiate and public tournaments such as the 2000 Men’s Big Ten Championship, the 2003 Women’s NCAA Championship, the 2004 Indiana Open, the 2005 Women’s Western Amateur, and the 2008 Men’s NCAA Championship.

GOPHER INVITE RECAP
Sophomore Noah Kent and junior Gage Messingham both finished inside top-15 for the weekend. Northern Colorado Transfer, Messingham was the only player on Iowa’s team to shoot 72 or better for three consecutive rounds. Messingham also led the Hawkeyes with 14 birdies and an eagle through 54 holes of play. Kent was second with eight total birdies for the weekend. The Hawkeyes finished fourth out of 15 schools.

LAST TIME AT THE PURDUE FALL INVITE
Mac McClear tied for fifth at one-under par (215) through 54 holes, shooting even-par (72) in the third round to move up one spot on the leaderboard. Ronan Kleu wrapped play with a 73 (+1) in the third round, bringing his total to 220 (+4) for the week. Kleu tied for 14th in the Fall of 2022.

NOAH KENT EARNS RUNNER-UP AT 124TH US AMATEUR
Sophomore Noah Kent, competed in his first USGA championship, but fell in the finals of the U.S. Amateur to Jose Luis Ballester after 36 holes of match play on August 18. Kent finished the tournament as runner-up and earned invites to The Masters and the U.S. Open. Kent was looking to become the first Hawkeye to win the U.S. Amateur. Ballester came into the tournament as the world’s No. 10 ranked Amateur while Noah came in as the No. 560th ranked amateur.

3 PRESEASON ALL-B1G PLAYERS TO WATCH
Noah Kent, Josh Lundmark, and Max Tjoa were named to the 2024-25 Preseason Big Ten Players to Watch on September 12 by the conference office.

STEVEN IHM NAMED ASSISTANT COACH
Ihm, a former student-athlete at Iowa competed on the men’s golf team from 2011-14. Ihm started his playing career at Indian Hills Community College where he led them to a Junior College National Championship and won the 2011 Phil Mickelson Award as the top freshman player in the NJCAA.

HAWKEYE NEWCOMERS
The Hawkeyes welcomed in four fresh faces to their program this fall. Head Coach Tyler Stith brought in three freshmen and a transfer.
– Gage Messingham, from Northern Colorado, was named the Big Sky Player of the Year in 2024 as well as first team all-conference and the all-tournament team. He had a scoring average of 72.03 with 10 rounds played in the 60s.
– Jack McCarty, a true freshman from Solon, Iowa led his team to three top-five finishes at the State Tournament. As a senior in high school, McCarty finished third in Class 3A State. His father, Sean McCarty, was a member of the Iowa men’s golf team from 1992-95.
– Chance Rinkol, a freshman from Leawood, Kansas was the 2021 Kansas 6A Individual Medalist. Rinkol posted a scoring average of 70.8 in 2023 and was ranked No. 46 in the Rolex Class in 2024. He was also the 2023 AJGA Joplin Junior Championship and Midwest PGA Junior Championship.
– Ryan Shellberg, a freshman from Prosper, Texas was tabbed No. 71 in the 2024 Rolex Class rankings. Shellberg placed second at the AJGA Mizuno Junior Championship and was a two-time all-region selection.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Hawkeyes will compete in the Fighting Irish Intercollegiate on Oct. 6-7.
