IOWA CITY, Iowa — A pair of University of Iowa juniors -- Gable Mitchell and Cade Obermueller -- were named to midseason watch lists it was announced Friday by the College Baseball Foundation. Mitchell was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List while Obermueller was named to the Pitcher of the Year Watch List.
The Brooks Wallace Award honors the nation’s top shortstop and is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. The initial midseason list headlines 100 of the most talented shortstops in Division I college baseball.
Mitchell has started all 35 games for the Hawkeyes this season. The Iowa City, Iowa, native leads the team with a .364 batting average and 39 runs scored. He's batted in 30 runs on 52 hits, including 13 doubles and three home runs.
Mitchell extended his on base streak to 36 games dating back to 2024. He has not struck out in 14 games and 59 at bats. His last strikeout came on March 21 against Ohio State. He ranks as the 24th toughest batter to strikeout in the nation.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Iowa City, Iowa, native holds a .955 fielding percentage with a team-high 87 assists.
Former Hawkeye Nick Roscetti was a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award in 2016, and Michael Seegers was on the watch list in 2023.
The Pitcher of the Year award, college baseball’s version of the Cy Young Award, was created in 2009, and is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate pitcher. The initial watch list headlines 54 of the most talented pitchers in Division I college baseball.
Obermueller has tallied a 2.18 ERA in 53.2 innings pitched. He has 76 strikeouts while allowing an opponent batting average of .197. The Iowa City, Iowa, native has a 4-2 record in nine starts for Iowa. He ranks eighth in the nation in strikeouts and 20th in strikeouts per nine innings (12.75).
Obermueller and former Hawkeye Brody Brecht were on the watch list in 2024.
The University of Iowa baseball team travels to Ann Arbor for a three-game series against Michigan on April 18-20. First pitch of the series is slated for 5 p.m. (CDT) on Friday.
