No. 48 Iowa Downs No. 46 Penn State; Boros Ties Iowa Record

The 48th-ranked Iowa women’s tennis team defeated No. 46 Penn State (12-7, 3-5), 4-2, on Friday at the HTRC and head coach Sasha Boros tied the program record with her 112th career win with the Hawkeyes.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 48th-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team defeated No. 46 Penn State (12-7, 3-5), 4-2, on Friday night at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex and head coach Sasha Boros tied the program record with her 112th career win with the Hawkeyes. 

Boros’ 112 wins tie Micki Shillig for the most wins in Iowa women’s tennis history. With the win, Iowa improves to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten play. It win is the team’s second-ranked victory of the season.

Iowa started strong by securing the doubles point. On court three, Nikita Vishwase and Pia Kranholdt made quick work of Jordina Cegarra and Maria Daciana Ciubotaru with a 6-1 victory. Tereza Dejnozkova and Emma Tothová clinched the point on court two, adding a 7-5 victory over Maiko Uchijima and Patricia Grigoras.

The remaining match on court one was left unfinished, with No. 49 Daianne Hayashida and Mia Mack leading Olivia Dorner and Maelie Monfils, 6-5.

In singles action, Iowa extended its lead to two on court one, where No. 52 Mack defeated Monfils, 6-3, 6-1. Penn State added its first point of the match on court four with Uchijima downing Tothová in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-0.

On court six, Kranholdt added a 7-6 (6) victory over Baldi. The Nittany Lions responded on court two, where Grigoras edged Hayashida, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. 

In the deciding match on court five, Vishwase battled back to earn a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ciubotaru to give the Hawkeyes their 10th win.

The remaining singles match on court three was left unfinished with Dejnozkova battling Dorner, 6-2, 3-6, 5-5.

“I thought we played well today. We had some key volleys and we have to continue doing that in important moments. Finding four points today is a huge win for us. I still don’t think were operating on all of our cylinders, but I think there’s time, and we have to use this urgency to our advantage.”

Iowa (10-10, 4-5) will face No. 3 Ohio State on Senior Day on Sunday at noon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
