FRISCO, Texas – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Houston, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at Riders Field in the Frisco College Baseball Classic.
“Really proud of our guys,” head coach Rick Heller said. “Quick turnaround after a tough loss last night… We only had two free bases on the day, so really pleased with that. Kooper Schulte made a bunch of plays at short and really good defense by our guys. Caleb Wulf had a really good game today.”
Iowa struck first, scoring a run in the opening inning as senior Gable Mitchell was driven in by senior Kooper Schulte on a sacrifice fly.
Logan Runde got the start on the mound and went two innings, allowing two runs in the bottom of the second on a home run. He gave up four hits and struck out two.
The Hawkeyes retook the lead in the third with a three-run inning and led the rest of the way. Senior Caleb Wulf doubled in redshirt junior Jaylen Ziegler before a Schulte single brought Wulf home. Senior Mitch Wood also drove in a run in the frame.
Sophomore Jaron Bleeker was first out of the bullpen for Iowa and threw four innings, allowing one run and striking out four to earn his second win of the season.
Iowa added runs in the fourth and sixth innings as Mitchell and Wulf each recorded an RBI.
Wulf finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a sacrifice bunt.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Alivo threw 2 1/3 innings, striking out four and allowing one run.
