Stirtz Named USBWA All-American

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Bennett Stirtz has been named to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America Team, it was announced Wednesday by the association.  He is an honorable mention selection.

It is Stirtz’s second All-America distinction in as many days as he was selected as an Associated Press honorable mention All-American and as an NABC All-Central Region selection on Tuesday.

Stirtz, who has garnered All-America distinction in consecutive seasons, currently ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 20 points to go along with 4.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals.  He has a .492/.376/.845 shooting clip with 18 20-point and three 30-point contests.

In 33 games, Stirtz has scored 661 points, which are the seventh-most in a single season in program history.  He is two points from passing Andre Woolridge for sixth place and 15 points from moving past Roy Marble into the top five.

Stirtz and Woolridge are the only two Hawkeyes to score 600+ points and have 100+ assists in a single season. Stirtz has scored in double figures in 31 of Iowa’s 33 games as a Hawkeye. He is the only player in the nation with 660+ points, 145+ assists, 80+ 3-pointers, 80+ rebounds and 45+ steals.

The ninth-seeded Hawkeyes will face eighth-seeded Clemson in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday in Tampa, Fla.  The game will tipoff at 5:50 p.m. (CT) and it will be televised on TNT.
