The ninth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 6 Penn State, 1-0, at Grant Field Saturday. Iowa, raised its record to 7-2 (1-0), while Penn State fell to 6-2 (0-1).
Senior forward Pattie Gillern put the game’s only goal on the board just 4:20 into the second half. It was Gillern’s team leading sixth of the season, and her fourth game-winning goal of the year.
The game was a hotly contested contest the whole way, and each team played even in the first half. Both squads put four shots on goal in the first frame, and Penn State held a 5-3 first half lead in penalty corners.
The Hawkeyes started to control play more in the second half, keeping the ball in their attack zone for extended periods. Iowa out-shot Penn State 5-1 in the second half.
Barb Weinberg had to make only one save in picking up her fourth shutout of the season.
Iowa returns to action Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they take on the Southwest Missouri State Bears at Grant Field.
