OZARK, MO – The Iowa baseball team (1-5) fell 13-2 to Southwest Missouri State (4-5) at Price Cutter Park. The Hawkeyes couldn’t solve the SMS starter Derek Drage as he held Iowa to five hits and one earned run in seven innings.
Drage, who struck out six batters, held the Hawkeyes hitless through the first 4 1/3 innings, before Andy Cox singled on a slow roller up the middle.
SMS scored two runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Scott Nasby. Freshman Micheal Washburn relieved Ryan Dupic in the bottom of the fourth after Dupic gave up four runs, including a two-run double to Bear 3B Brooks Colvin to extend the SMS lead to 6-0.
SMS added seven more runs in fifth to chase Washburn out of the game. Aaron Reasland replaced the freshman righthander with two outs in the inning.
Senior Jim Reid, who was 2-for-2 in the game, led off the seventh inning with a stinging double down the right field line. Reid scored on a Mike Best single to get the Hawkeyes on the board. Reid knocked in the second Iowa run in the eighth on an RBI single that plated Jeff Gremley.
The Hawkeyes will return to action on March 13, when they will face Maine in DeLand, FL.
