Bloomington, IN – The University of Iowa women’s rowing team raced well against strong Big Ten competition Saturday afternoon on Lake Lemon in Bloomington, IN. The Hawkeyes faced Wisconsin and Indiana in the morning, and took on Ohio State and Wisconsin in the afternoon.
In the morning competition, the Varsity Eight took second with a time of 6:37.36, finishing only two seconds behind Wisconsin’s 14th ranked Varsity Eight crew. Crew members on Iowa’s V8+ were: Sheena Williams, Megan Manijak, Lydia McGee, Carolyn O’Meara, Leslie Stach, Nikki Stob, Michelle Trannel, Emily Vail and Kate Ramundt. The Second Varsity Eight also took second with a time of 7:03.92, finishing behind Wisconsin’s time of 6:48.0. The Novice Eight finished third with a time of 7:34.17, while Wisconsin took top honors with a time of 7:06.5 and Indiana finished second with a time of 7:08.96. The Second Novice Eight finished second behind Wisconsin with a time of 7:55.02.
In the afternoon, the Varsity Eight fell to top-ranked Ohio State and No. 14 Wisconsin, finishing third with a time of 6:47.54. The Second Varsity Eight also took third with a time of 7:11.1, finishing behind Ohio State (6:46.1) and Wisconsin (6:50.26). The Novice Eight finished third behind Ohio State and Wisconsin, but no times were available. The Second Novice Eight took second with a time of 7:38.39, finishing behind Ohio State’s time of 7:25.6.
“The Varsity Eight put together a good race in the morning, competing against great crews from Wisconsin and Indiana. In the afternoon, we made some changes and stuck with Ohio State and Wisconsin, but fell behind in the last 500 meters,” commented Head Coach Mandi Kowal.
The Hawkeyes have a week off before they compete at the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City on May 1, 2004.
