MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa softball team swept a doubleheader against the Wisconsin Badgers Sunday in Madison, WI. The Hawkeyes took game one 1-0, then won the second game 5-0.
Iowa is now 37-19 with a 14-4 record in the Big Ten, while Wisconsin falls to 27-27 with a 5-13 conference mark.
In game one, Junior Lisa Birocci recorded nine strikeouts, setting a new single-season strikeout record at the University of Iowa. The Des Moines native now has 267 strikeouts on the season, topping the previous mark of 260 she set last year.
Birocci allowed just three hits in the game, and threw all seven innings in picking up the win.
The Hawkeyes took advantage of some sloppy glovework by the Badgers in the top of the first to push across the games only run. With one out, Amanda Hentges reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error by the third baseman. She moved over to third on a passed ball, then scored on a wild pitch.
Katie Layne went the distance for Wisconsin, allowing just three Hawkeye hits and the one unearned run.
In game two, Iowa took a 3-0 lead in the first off RBIs from Stacy May, Kylie Murray and Ali Arnold. The Hawkeyes then got insurance runs in the third and sixth to give them a 5-0 lead.
Arnold went the distance for Iowa, allowing three hits and striking out four.
The Hawkeyes will return to action Tuesday night at home against William Penn. The game will be Iowa’s last home contest of the season and starts at 6 p.m.
