WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s track teams each advanced three competitors to Sunday’s event finals at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in West Lafayette, IN, Saturday. The men’s team is currently in fifth place with 21 points, while the women’s team is in 10th place with 10 points. The Hawkeyes also posted seven regional qualifiers on the day.

Senior Shellene Williams posted the best time in the 400-meter prelims, running a 54.01. If she wins Sunday’s race, Williams will become only the third female athlete in school history to win four conference titles. Senior Michelle Lahann placed third in the 800-meter prelims (2:09.93) to advance to the finals, and Iowa’s 400-meter relay of freshmen Lindsey McCalla, Peaches Roach and Tiffany Johnson and Williams advanced with their time of 46.18. For the men’s team, senior Zach Digney advanced in the 100 meters (10.70), while seniors Russell Peterson and Tony Leick advanced in the 400-meter hurdles with respective times of 51.96 and 52.14.

In Saturday’s event finals, senior Sarah Arens broke her own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:34.50, placing sixth. Junior Tiff Pedersen placed third in the heptathlon with a collegiate-best point total of 4,976. Senior Eric Rothwell placed third in the discus with a collegiate-best 179-7. Senior Brad Daufeldt placed sixth in that event, throwing a 174-8.

Iowa’s regional qualifiers were Arens (3,000-meter steeplechase), Lahann (800 meters) and Williams (400 meters) for the women’s team, and Peterson (400-meter hurdles), Leick (400-meter hurdles), Rothwell (discus) and Daufeldt (discus) for the men’s team.
