The Iowa women’s tennis team recorded three singles wins on the first day of the Hoosier Classic.

With Iowa’s top two players away at the Riviera All-American Tournament, the remaining Hawkeyes stepped up big. Anastasia Zhukova defeated Daysi Espinal of LSU, 6-4, 6-2, in Flight B singles. Freshman Milica Veselinovic won over Murray State’s Rachael Lask in Flight C singles. Morgan Tuttle soundly defeated Aveen Alkhatib of Kansas State, 6-0, 6-0, in Flight E singles.

In doubles, the Hawkeyes didn’t fare as well, going 0-4. Zhukova and Veselinovic first lost to Laura McGaffigan and Kara Zeder of Indiana, 8-6, then dropped a match to LSU’s Daysi Espinal and Marina Calieri, 8-6. The doubles duo of Tuttle and Tyler lost two heartbreakers. In the first round, they lost to Missouri’s Erika Josbena and Yelena Olshanskaya, 9-8 (3). In a consolation match, the team lost to Jaclyn Leeper and Christina Hall of Murray State, 9-8 (6).

The Hawkeyes will continue the Hoosier Classic tomorrow.
