Box Score

Ames, IA – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by Iowa State on Sunday, 6-1. Iowa State scored four goals in the first half to jump out to an early lead and gained two points for Iowa State in the first annual HyVee Cy-Hawk series.

Iowa State wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring in the second minute when Kelly Burke blasted a shot off a cross from Kristina Baumann. Iowa State saw a scoring chance off a corner kick just minutes after, but the shot glanced off Britta Vogele for the save. Iowa State had a rebound shot but Vogele made a terrific diving stop to knock it away. The Cyclones had one more chance off another rebound and Vogele once again knocked it away. The ball nearly crossed the goal line after the save, but Iowa defenders pushed it away from the goal and offsides was then called on Iowa State.

Jess Villhauer scored Iowa State’s second goal in the 15th minute off assists from Baumann and Amy Flores to put the score at 2-0. The Cyclones added another goal in the 20th minute when Baumann blasted a shot that glanced off Vogele’s hands and rolled into the back of the net. Iowa scored an own goal late in the first half and Iowa State led 4-0 at halftime.

Iowa scored in the 74th minute when Melisa Kaetterhenry tipped in a shot off a cross from Lindsey Phillips. Iowa State added two more goals in the second half to make the final score 6-1.

Iowa still leads the Cy-Hawk series 3-2. The next matchup will be the women’s basketball game in Iowa City on December 1, which is worth two points.
