IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team was defeated by Notre Dame 176-118 tonight at the UI Fieldhouse Pool despite swimming numerous season best times. The Hawkeyes will fall to 0-3 (0-2 Big Ten), while the Fighting Irish will improve to 3-1 (0-0 Big East).
Iowa was led by strong overall performances up and down the lineup. Three Hawkeyes came away with victories two individual events. Senior Alex Boyce, junior Andrei Ciurca as well as freshman Dragos Agache had two individual victories. Boyce claimed first in the 100 butterfly (49.87) and 50 freestyle (21.17), with both times breaking season best times for the Hawkeyes. Ciurca swept the backstroke competitions taking first in the 100 and 200 events. His time of 50.85 in the 100 backstroke and 1:51.28 in the 200 backstroke were both new season bests for the Hawkeyes. While freshman Dragos Agache repeated the feet of Ciurca in the breaststroke events, finishing on top in both the 100 and 200 events. Setting as well new season best marks in both events with times of 56.29 in the 100 and 2:05.02 in the 200. Iowa’s 200 medley relay team remained undefeated on the season posting a time of 1:32.04 inching past their previous season best time of 1:32.97. The team consisted of Andrei Ciurca, Dragos Agache, Alex Boyce and Bryan Rowland.
Iowa will next compete next Friday, November 12 at 5 p.m. The Hawkeyes will host Truman State, the competition will be co-ed.
