IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa women’s swimming & diving team won all but one event in a 214-85 rout of in-state rival Iowa State Saturday afternoon at the Fieldhouse Pool. Senior Jennifer Skolaski tallied three individual first-place finishes for the Hawkeyes, while senior diver Lisette Planken swept the one- and three-meter diving events.
With the victory, the Iowa improves to 7-2 in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. The Cy-Hawk Series is the name given to the collection of regular-season, head-to-head intercollegiate athletic events featuring Cyclone and Hawkeye teams. A point system will track each institution’s performance and will culminate in one institution winning the annual trophy.
The Hawkeye women started the meet strong, taking first, third and fourth in the 200 medley relay. Iowa A, comprised of Jennifer Skolaski, Katie Haeger, Kelly Werner, and Abby VanMaaren clocked a 1:46.24 for first place.
In a close 1,000 free race, Hawkeye junior Erica Noah edged Iowa State’s Lydia Smirniotis for first place with a time of 10:29.24. Noah also took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.25.
Iowa dominated the 200 free and 100 back competitions. Skolaski captured first in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.65, while junior Katie Martin finished third (1:55.21) and VanMaaren took fourth (1:59.70). In the 100 back, Werner swam to a first-place finish, clocking a time of 57.18. Iowa senior Katelyn Eustis finished third (59.51) while senior Caitlin Girdley took fourth (1:00.00).
The Hawkeyes swept the 100 and 200 breast competitions. Senior Katie Haeger timed a 1:06.30 for first in the 100 breast while sophomore Emmy Haeger took second (1:06.52) and senior Kristen Eide finished third (1:06.89). Eide then took first in the 200 breast (2:24.03), while Emmy Haeger finished second (2:25.75) and Eustis captured third (2:26.30).
Iowa continued their winning spree as junior Andrea Hemphill swam to her first of two first-place finishes in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.37. Sophomore Erin Petty finished third (2:10.30) and junior Katie Koenig finished fifth (2:17.78). Hemphill also took first in the 100 fly (57.58).
Iowa State won its lone event in the 50 free as Cyclone senior Brita Benson clocked a 24.34 for first-place. Iowa’s VanMaaren and Karen Kelly tied for second place, each swimming a 24.35. The Hawkeyes rebounded in the 100 free as Martin took first (52.39) and Kelly finished second (52.59).
In the 200 back competition, Skolaski swam to her second first-place finish, clocking a 2:01.87. Werner followed closely behind, taking second with a time of 2:03.84.
In the final individual event, the 200 IM, Skolaski put up her third first-place finish, winning with a time of 2:07.02. Eustis was the third-place finisher, timing a 2:10.09.
Hawkeye senior Lisette Planken swept the one- and three-meter diving events. She scored a 316.35 in the one-meter competition and a 308.70 in the three-meter. Junior Nancilea Underwood took second in both events.
The Hawkeyes will head to Honolulu, Hawaii on January 2-13 for Winter Training and return to competition on January 21 at home against Northern Iowa.
