Deland, FL – The University of Iowa softball team ended its first weekend of play on a high note, defeating Virginia Tech, 3-2 and Stetson, 3-0. The Hawkeyes knocked out 13 hits on the day.

Iowa came out swinging in game one, scoring all three runs in the first inning. Kylie Murray scored off a Natalie Johnson single for the first run of the inning. Stacy May then doubled to left field and Mindy Heidgerken knocked in Johnson on a bunt. May scored on a fielding error by the Hokie shortstop to make the score 3-0.

Mindy Heidgerken had another solid day at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI. Ali Arnold earned her first win of the season for the Hawkeyes. The junior threw four innings and struck out two. Lisa Birocci pitched three innings of relief and gave up one hit and struck out one.

The Hawkeyes scored a run in the second, third and fourth innings against Stetson. Two Hawkeyes collected multiple hits. Natalie Johnson went 2-4 while freshman Emily Nichols was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Birocci collected her second win of the season, giving up one hit over four innings of work. The senior struck out two and walked none. Steph Ackerson pitched three innings of relief and gave up three hits while striking out three.

Iowa will travel to Louisville, KY on February 18-20 to compete in the Littlewood Classic. The Hawkeyes will compete against Long Island, Arizona State and Illinois State.
