Marietta, GA – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Georgia Southern, 6-0 in both games on Friday at the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech University. Lisa Birocci threw a no-hitter and recorded a school record 17 strikeouts in game two at the Buzz Classic.
The Hawkeye offense exploded in both games, combining for 21 hits on the day. In game one, Kylie Murray went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI while Mindy Heidgerken went 2-4 with a double. Jenna Spratt, Barb Weinberg and Abby Ruff all stole a base for the Hawkeyes.
Ali Arnold threw a complete game shutout, giving up five hits and striking out six. Arnold is now 4-1 this season.
In game two, Emily Nichols hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second and fifth innings to score four of Iowa’s six runs. Nichols tied the school record for most home runs in a single game. Stacy May and Brandi Sargent also had multiple hits. May went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Sargent went 2-2.
Birocci threw her second career no-hitter and struck out 17 of the 24 batters she faced. The senior walked three batters and struck out the first batter in five of the seven innings. Birocci also recorded her fifth shutout this season.
The Hawkeyes return to action on Saturday at the Buzz Classic. Iowa will face Auburn (3:00 p.m.) and Middle Tennessee State (5:00 p.m.) in the final round of pool play. Championship bracket play begins at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
