Today
The Iowa softball team’s season came to an end Sunday when the Hawkeyes were defeated by Washington in regional competition of the 2005 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. However, while the loss was difficult, 50 wins, another year’s worth of experience for the returning Hawkeyes and a strong recruiting class has Coach Gayle Blevins eager to start it all over again.

Iowa took three of four from the 2005 Big Ten Conference regular season champions last weekend at Illinois. Now, Coach Jack Dahm’s squad prepares to head right back to Champaign, Ill., for the 2005 Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes head into Wednesday’s game against Minnesota with great momentum.

Iowa travels to Lincoln, Neb., Friday for the start of the 2005 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. The Hawkeyes will meet the host school, Nebraska, in the first of what UI Coach Gayle Blevins will be a long run in post-season action.

A pair of difficult one-run losses last weekend at Purdue have placed Jack Dahm’s squad in a position where it will need some help to gain a first-round bye in the 2005 Big Ten Tournament. Iowa travels to league-leader Illinois this weekend. The Hawkeyes need to play confidently in Champaign.

James Grant talks about his Iowa women’s track team and this weekend’s Big Ten Conference Track and Field Championship. The Hawkeyes hope to grab some hardware and qualify a few more student-athletes for NCAA competition.

Gayle Blevins’ Iowa softball team heads into a Big Ten Tournament Friday that’s loaded with talent. The third-seed and nationally ranked Hawkeyes square off against Penn State – an opponent that has the attention of Iowa’s head coach and student-athletes.

Marc Long, head coach of Iowa’s men’s and women’s swimming programs, talks about the new facility that is coming to the University of Iowa campus. And, while he admits it will take a while to be completed, just the fact that planning is officially beginning will provide a significant boost to the Hawkeye program.

The Iowa women’s tennis team is hot. The nationally ranked Hawkeyes recently registered their best-ever finish in Big Ten post-season competition. Now, it’s the NCAA Tournament. UI Coach Daryl Greenan.

With eight regular season Big Ten Conference games left on the schedule, Coach Jack Dahm’s Iowa Hawkeyes find themselves sitting alone in second place. The squad is there thanks to a solid performance by pitcher Austin Seward in Sunday’s fourth and final game against Minnesota last weekend at Banks Field.

A pair of college baseball teams eyeing a Big Ten Conference championship will square off at Duane Banks Field four times this weekend. The two teams both rest in second place, just a hiccup behind first-place Illinois.

The prelims are over and, now, Coach Larry Wieczorek and his UI men’s track team eyes the Big Ten Conference Championship next week at The Ohio State University. Iowa has qualified seven student-athletes for NCAA regional competition. Wieczorek thinks a couple of Iowa’s relay teams have a chance of joining that group.

Terry Anderson expects his Iowa men’s golf team to play with a chip on its shoulder this weekend when it travels to the University of Wisconsin for the 2005 Big Ten Conference Championships. He also expects his squad to play smart.

Hard-fought losses in the firs three games last weekend against Northwestern tested the mettle of Coach Jack Dahm’s Iowa baseball team. An extra-inning victory in Game 4 was evidence that the Hawkeyes were in the race for this year’s Big Ten Conference title until the end.

Iowa’s baseball team went back to the basics yesterday at practice in an effort to shore up some shaky defense and poor hitting that doomed them in two losses midweek. Coach Jack Dahm’s squad needs to relax heading into a four-game set at Northwestern that begins Friday at 3 p.m.

The Iowa softball team has 41 wins to their credit and 10 home games left before the 2005 Big Ten Tournament. Gayle Blevins credits her team’s ability to focus and a year’s worth of experience as the difference between this year’s squad and last year’s.

Iowa defeated North Dakota State earlier this week thanks to the hard work of senior Jeff Maitland. It was the first start in two seasons for the left-hander, who appears nearly fully recovered from an injured elbow. “It’s really hard to say,” Maitland said when asked about how it felt to be back on the mound.

The seventh annual Musco Twilight Invitational is scheduled for this Saturday evening at the Cretzmeyer Track on the UI campus. The Musco event has grown from humble beginnings to a major event and this year it will serve as a warm-up for next week’s Drake Relays.

A lesson was learned by the University of Iowa men’s golf team last weekend. UI Coach Terry Anderson says it’s as simple as “playing the scorecard.” Next up for the Hawkeyes is the very long Scarlet Course on the campus of The Ohio State University.

The 2005 volleyball season is months off in the distance, but that doesn’t mean there’s not work getting done in Coach Cindy Fredrick’s camp. An area that’s getting a lot of off-season attention is Iowa’s offensive gameplan. Fredrick’s also looking for team leaders.

Iowa’s baseball team is off to its best start since the 1990 season. Quality starting pitching was the answer to what the Indiana Hoosiers threw at the Hawkeyes last weekend. Iowa’s only loss in the four-game set with IU came on Sunday and, perhaps, the responsibility for that loss fell on the shoulders of the head coach.

The Iowa baseball team is riding a winning streak and a strong start in Big Ten play into this weekend’s four-game series with Indiana at Duane Banks Field. Despite the success, UI Coach Jack Dahm tells Brett Balbinot that there’s plenty of work to be done.

Chad Greenway is the 15th University of Iowa football player to be named a pre-season all-American by Playboy magazine, but he’s feeling a little empty. His partner in tackles on the gridiron, linebacker Abdul Hodge, isn’t in the spotlight with him.

Bobbe Carney’s Iowa women’s golf team travels to Columbus, Ohio this weekend and do so with the momentum of four straight top 10 finishes. Carney and Brett Balbinot visit about adjusting to the changes in the game that come with the opportunity to practice outdoors.

Iowa’s offense hit another gear and the Hawkeyes came from behind to win three of four games last weekend at Michigan. Success like this will keep Iowa in the mix to recruit to the very best student-athletes from the state.

Iowa’s softball team returns to Big Ten action today after bouncing back from three-straight league losses last weekend with a victory earlier this week at Northern Illinois. Purdue and Indiana are waiting in the wings and Gayle Blevins says she’s expecting a solid performance from her Hawkeyes.

Bob Rydze has traveled the globe during his 30 years of coaching some of the nation’s top divers. His latest success story involved UI junior Nancilea Underwood, who copped a pair of bronze medals in an international diving competition in China.

Salt Lake City here we come! Larissa Libby’s Iowa women’s gymnatics team will make its fourth straight NCAA Championship appearance Saturday when they square off against five nationally ranked squads.

Iowa begins its quest for its 37th appearance in the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship this weekend. Coach Tom Dunn’s squad is strong on the floor, but they’ll need to be strong across the spectrum of events if they are to advance out of the regional.

Jack Dahm’s Iowa Hawkeyes opened the Big Ten Conference baseball season with a split of four home games with the Spartans of Michigan State. “It’s nice to open the year in the middle of the pack versus the bottom,” said Dahm, after Iowa pounded 11 hits in Sunday’s 10-7 victory.

The Iowa women’s basketball team has surprised its opponents and even itself with its early season success. Now, it’s Iowa State in the new Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. High energy on and off the court would be big for the Hawkeyes. Libby’s squad and Coach Tom Dunn’s men’s team square off in the team’s annual Black and Gold event at 2 p.m. Saturday in the UI Fieldhouse.

It’s roundball season and while neither Iowa basketball team had much chance to work on their tans during their recent trips to Hawaii and the Bahamas, both came away with very strong performances.
