WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened its 2005 fall season Saturday at the two-day Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, IN. All matches were held at the Purdue University Varsity Tennis Courts, and the competing teams were Butler, Iowa, Purdue and Toledo.
All nine Hawkeyes went 1-1 on the day in singles, and six will face each other in the fifth-place match on Sunday. Freshman Christian Bierich will face senior Brett Taylor in the gold flight, sophomore Bart van Monsjou will face sophomore J.P. Ritchie in the black flight, and junior Jonny Hoak will face freshman Zach Frisch in the white flight. Senior Aaron Schaechterle was the lone Hawkeye to win his first round singles match, defeating Toledo’s Travis Curran, 6-3, 6-4, in the white flight. All four Iowa doubles teams lost their first round match, and will be competing in the consolation bracket on Sunday. Hawkeye freshmen Bierich, Frisch and Greg Holm made their collegiate debuts at the tournament. Iowa is without the services of seniors Chaitu Malempati and Kyle Markham this fall, as both are injured.
Sunday’s matches will start at 9 a.m. and will be held on Purdue’s Varsity Tennis Courts.
