MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed Friday in the opening rounds of the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, WI. All matches were played at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. This three-day invitational hosts teams from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Drake, Marquette and Northern Illinois.
The Hawkeyes took nine wins on the first day of play, competing only in singles matches. Freshman Christian Bierich and sophomore Bart van Monsjou both went undefeated in their two matches. Bierich defeated Vedrickas of Marquette 6-3, 5-7 (10-8). His second win came against Livingston of Northern Illinois, 5-7, 6-4 (8). Van Monsjou won against Binkley of Marquette in the first round, 7-6 (4), 6-4. He defeated Tate of Northern Illinois, 7-6, 6-0, in his second match.
Hawkeye freshman Zach Frisch, senior Aaron Schaechterle and junior Scott Elwell all went undefeated as well (1-0). Junior Jonny Hoak and freshman Greg Holm also snagged wins for the Hawkeyes, going 1-1. The Hawkeyes are playing without seniors Chaitu Malempati and Kyle Markham, as are both still injured.
Saturday’s matches will begin at 9 a.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
