University Park, PA – The Hawkeyes overwhelmed Penn State in Saturday’s doubleheader, 11-3, and won game two, 2-1. The win puts the Hawkeyes at 4-3 in the Big Ten.
Jeff Maitland went the distance in game one, allowing three runs on seven hits, with no walks. Maitland is 4-0 for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa came out strong in the first, scoring three runs. Nate Price scored on a throwing error and Dusty Napoleon doubled to right to score Travis Sweet and Jeff Engle. Napoleon was 3-4 in the game.
In the sixth, Iowa scored four runs after Wes Freie, Jason White and L.J. Mims singled.
In game two, the Hawkeyes struck first in the second inning. Freie doubled down the left field line and scored on Mims’ single through the left side.
Penn State tied it in the fourth, but Iowa jumped ahead in the fifth. White reached on an error and scored when Price singled to first, to give the Hawkeyes a 2-1 lead.
Austin Seward (2-3) started for the Hawkeyes, going five innings, allowing three hits and one run. Tim Gudex got the save, his fifth, after throwing two scoreless innings and allowing no runs.
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday for the final game in the series against Penn State. The first pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Beaver Field in University Park, PA.
