The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Northwestern in a non-conference game today, 2-1. Iowa defeated Northwestern in conference action on Oct. 8, 3-1 at Grant Field. The Hawkeyes were led by sophomores Roz Ellis and Katie Naughton who each scored their first goal of the season. The win improves Iowa’s overall record to 8-7.

The Hawkeyes out shot Northwestern 8-2 during the first half. Northwestern was able to stop all but one shot. Iowa was awarded three penalty corners but were unable to convert. In the 29th minute Naughton took a pass from Meghan Beamesderfer and blasted the ball past the Wildcat defense making the score 1-0. With less than two minutes in the half, Northwestern was able to sneak a ball past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley tying the score at one.

The second period continued to be a defensive battle. The Hawkeyes stepped up to the challenge and held Northwestern scoreless in the half. Sophomore Caitlin McCurdy was able to take four shots in the half but was unable to put any past the Northwestern defense. Iowa was finally able to score the deciding goal in 67th minute when Ellis put one past the Wildcat goalkeeper. Northwestern made things interesting when they were awarded two penalty corners with less than two minutes left in regulation. The Hawkeye defense responded by keeping both of the Wildcat shots out of the goal.
