DeLAND, FL – The University of Iowa baseball team toppled the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 8-1, Saturday in a rain-shortened game at the Stetson Tournament. With the Hawkeyes coasting towards victory, heavy rains halted play after the seventh inning. The teams waited four and a half hours for the skies to clear, but the rains persisted and the game was eventually called.
All remaining games scheduled for today have been cancelled, and Iowa will play Nebraska tomorrow at 9 a.m. The game against Stetson will not be played.
The Hawkeyes got a gem from sophomore pitcher Steve Turnbull, who held the Fighting Irish hitless through the first four and two-thirds innings. Turnbull picked up the win after allowing just one run off two hits and striking out six in five and a third innings pitched.
Travis Sweet paced the offense today, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Rightfielder Kyle Riffel went 2-of-4 with a run scored, while leadoff hitter Jason White was 1-of-3 with a home run.
“I thought the guys played really well today,” Iowa Head Coach Jack Dahm said. “We got an excellent outing from Turnbull, and the offense did a good job in putting up eight runs against a very good team. It’s too bad we couldn’t finish the game, but sometimes weather just won’t cooperate.”
Iowa jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Sweet doubled, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Hoef. The Hawkeyes upped the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the third, highlighted by White’s leadoff home run.
Matt Wooldrik brought home a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, then Iowa scored a pair in the fifth and their final run in the sixth to take a commanding 8-1 lead before the rains came.
Scott Brune finished up the game for Iowa, allowing one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
