ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Iowa field hockey team was defeated by No. 3 North Carolina, 5-2 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge today. The Hawkeyes were able to hold the Tar Heels scoreless in the second half but could not overcome the first half deficit.

North Carolina was quick to score the first goal of the game. During the third minute, Jesse Gey took the pass in front of the cage and was able to sneak the ball past the Hawkeye defense.

The Hawkeyes then, took control of the ball and set-up junior Lindsey Duffy for a shot, but it was wide.

The Tar Heels rebounded the Duffy shot and returned to offense. They attempted four shots in four minutes. Two of the shots were stopped by Munley, while another was wide. The fourth shot slipped past the Hawkeye goalkeeper making the score 2-0.

During the 22nd minute, the No. 3 Tar Heels were awarded with their fourth penalty corner of the game. Rachel Dawson took the pass and blasted the ball into the Hawkeye defense, which deflected the ball into the cage making the score 3-0.

North Carolina extended its lead 4-0 during the 31st minute. The goal came from a broken penalty corner, which Melanie Brill shot in. Only four minutes later, the Tar Heels scored another goal making the halftime score 5-0.

During the second half, the Hawkeyes were able to shutdown the high-powered North Carolina offense.

The first Hawkeye goal came in the 38th minute when Duffy scored during a scuffle in front of the net.

The final goal of the game came during the 51st minute. Junior Katie Naughton blasted a shot which was saved by the Tar Heel goalkeeper, but Naughton grabbed the rebound and slapped the ball into the cage, making the score 5-2.

The No. 10 Hawkeyes return to action against No. 4 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 2nd, in Durham, NC at 12 p.m. (CT).
