Hawkeyes Run Win Streak To Six, Defeat Michigan 2-1

Sept. 30, 2007

Final Stats

IOWA CITY, IA – The Hawkeyes defeated Michigan 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Sunday and they passed a few milestones along the way.

Redshirt sophomore Jackie Kaeding scored her third goal of the season and junior Stephanie Hyink added the game-winner in the 83rd minute to give Iowa their first win against the Wolverines. Coming into Sunday’s match, Iowa was 0-11 all-time versus Michigan.

The win was also Iowa’s sixth-consecutive win, which is a new school-record. The victory improves the Hawkeyes’ record on the season to 6-1-3. Through ten games this season, the Hawkeyes have already matched last season’s win total.

“It was a great weekend,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “To come out and get wins against two Big Ten opponents is big for our program but it’s going to force us to work that much harder.”

The wind was a factor the whole match, but the Hawkeyes used it to their advantage in the first period. Kaeding took a cross from Kelsey Shaw and her shot from 25 yards out ricocheted off of a Michigan defender and into the net for her third goal in nine days.

Play heated up in the second half as Michigan would tie the score in the 79th minute. The Hawkeyes would not get flustered, as almost four minutes later, Hyink was in perfect position to receive a cross from Kelsie Full to put Iowa ahead for good.

Michigan controlled the tempo for most of the game, putting more players in the attacking third to keep pressure on the Hawkeyes. Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt was denied her sixth shutout of the season, but did corral five saves in the win.

Iowa finishes the season with seven of their last nine matches on the road. The Hawkeyes final homestand of the season will begin October 19 when they host Penn State.

The Hawkeyes will look to keep the win streak going, as they travel to UW-Milwaukee this Friday for a road match with the Panthers. Match time in Milwaukee is scheduled for 7 p.m.
