IOWA CITY, IA – On Sunday, the Hawkeyes entertained their in-state rivals to the west for their annual showdown, playing to a scoreless draw against Iowa State. The match, part of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series, gave each team one point and brought the standing score to 5-1 in favor of the Cyclones after three events.
Sunday’s draw marks the first time in school history that Iowa has started with three draws in their first four games. The school record for draws in a season is four, which happened back in 2005.
“Our effort was once again there today,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “Defensively, we did a lot of good things and goalies for both squads made terrific saves at critical times today.”
The Hawkeyes came out at the start of the game with an aggressive offensive approach, nearly scoring a goal in the first 30 seconds of the match. Junior Stephanie Hyink had a chance to end the match in the 98th minute, but her shot was high and wide of the goal box.
Defense ruled the field once again for the Hawkeyes, as senior Lindsey Boldt made a huge stop with less than two minutes to go in the second overtime. Sophomore Amanda Nimtz blasted a shot but Boldt dove to her right and made a diving stop to preserve the draw.
Three Hawkeye players saw their first action of the season, including senior Ashley Schlueter and sophomores Kelsey McCarron and Heather Windsor. Freshman Victoria Bachand also made her first career start.
Iowa will continue the search for their first win this Friday against Drake. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time at the UI Soccer Complex.
