IOWA CITY – The fifth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team (13-2, 4-1) defeated No. 9 Penn State (10-6, 2-3) in a defensive battle Saturday. Junior Lauren Pfeiffer recorded the game-winning goal in overtime, via the penalty stroke. The Hawkeyes are currently in second place in the Big Ten with a record of 4-1, tied with Michigan State.

“From beginning to end the game was a battle, which is exactly what we expected,” Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. “The way that they (Penn State) played didn’t surprise us at all.”

The first half didn’t have much offensive action. Each team attempted only one shot and the Hawkeyes were awarded with the only penalty corner, which was unsuccessful.

The offensive for both teams woke up during the second half. The Hawkeyes scored the first goal during the 49th minute, when junior Lindsey Duffy poked in her fifth goal of the season. She received the assists from junior Caroline Blaum. Blaum leads the team in assists with nine.

“It took awhile for us to adjust and get into our offense,” Griesbaum said. “In the second half, we played smarter which turned into us being on the attack more frequent.”

During the 55th minute, the Nittany Lions were awarded with a penalty corner. Kiersten Wood took the pass from Allison Scola and blasted the ball past Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley to tie the score. The two teams remained tied for the remainder of regulation.

In overtime, the Hawkeyes drew a penalty corner during the 71st minute. Pfeiffer took the shot but it was saved by the Penn State goalkeeper. After she blocked the ball, a penalty was called against Penn State awarding Iowa with a penalty stroke.

Pfeiffer, has already converted one of two penalty strokes this season, lined up for the stroke. She lifted the ball beyond the goalkeepers reach and scored the game-winner. It is her 13th goal of the season and fifth game-winning goal.

With this goal, Pfeiffer has lengthened her scoring streak to seven consecutive games. During the streak she has recorded nine goals and two assists.

The No. 5 Hawkeyes will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. (CT), against Northwestern at Grant Field. This will be a non-conference game.
