Oct. 28, 2007

WILMINGTON, NC – The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished its final day of competition at the Landfall Tradition. The Hawkeyes recorded an 18-hole score of 286 (-2) Sunday, the lowest of any school on the day. Iowa finished the tournament tied for third in the 12-team field, with a 54-hole total of 875 (+11). The Hawkeyes finished three strokes from first-place behind Tulsa and Virginia Tech, who tied with scores of 872 (+8).

Seniors Todd Larson and Dan Holterhaus led the Hawkeyes Sunday. Each finished in the top 10, as Larson finished third and Holterhaus tied for fifth. Larson fired a five-under par 67 to finish with a 54-hole total of 213 (-3). Holterhaus shot a two-under par 70 to finish with a 216 (E). Junior Cole Peevler finished 37th with a 230 (+4), as he shot a one-over par 73 on the final day. Senior Adam Miller shot an 82 (+10) to finish with a 231 (+15). Miller tied for 38th place. Also, freshman Vince India chipped in with a 76 (+4). India tied for 44th with a 232 (+16).

The Hawkeyes’ stellar play on Sunday tied a number of school records. Larson’s 67 (-5) tied his career low and is the fourth lowest 18-hole score in history. Additionally, his 54-hole total of 213 (-3) tied former Hawkeye and PGA player Guy Boros, among others, with the sixth-lowest total in history. As a team, Iowa tied the seventh best 18-hole team score with a 286 and the 857 was the 10th-best 54-hole team total in history.

Larson was pleased with the Hawkeyes performance. “We finally put four good scores together and we saw what we could do when we play well. We look to build on our performance going into next week.”

Holterhaus comments on handling the elements. “As a team we did very well as it was our best finish of the year. Todd played great today and that really helped us out. It was extremely windy today and we handled the wind well. We have been practicing in some windy conditions so that helped us get by some teams today.”

Head Coach Mark Hankins liked what he saw from his group. “We have been working on playing each shot, one at a time. We handled the elements and the course really well. We finally put four good scores together each day of the tournament. I was very pleased with our overall consistency.”

The Hawkeyes will look to build on their stellar tournament as they wrap-up the fall season at the Wolverine Invitational in Mission Inn Resort, Florida Nov. 5.
