THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0) will host DePaul Friday at 3 p.m. and Toledo Sunday at 10 a.m. Both competitions will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

SCOUTING DEPAUL — DePaul (6-2 overall, 1-0 Big East) is ranked 58th in the latest ITA collegiate tennis rankings. The Blue Demons recently posted wins against Western Illinois, 6-1, and Marquette, 4-3. Senior George Wang has been a staple this season at the No. 1 position. DePaul’s head coach is Arvid Swan.

SCOUTING TOLEDO — The Toledo Rockets (4-5 overall) were most recently defeated by second-ranked Ohio State, 7-0. Freshman Keith Moran is leading the Rockets in singles competition with a record of 6-2. Toldeo’s head coach is Al Wermer.

THE SERIES — Iowa leads the series against DePaul, 5-1. Last year, the Hawkeyes defeated DePaul, 6-1, in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes also lead the series against Toledo, 5-0. The last meeting was in 2005 when the Hawkeyes defeated Toledo, 7-0, in Iowa City.

LAST TIME OUT — The Hawkeyes defeated Indiana State, 7-0. Iowa won all sets and all matches. In doubles competition, juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie teamed in the No. 1 position. Sophomores Greg Holm and Christian Bierich played in the No. 2 position. Freshmen Tommy McGeorge and Patrick Dwyer rounded out doubles competition in the No. 3 spot. Dwyer, Holm, McGeorge and Ritchie are undefeated so far this season in singles competition.

HEAD COACH Steve Houghton — Steve Houghton, the dean of Big Ten tennis coaches, is in his 26th season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Houghton has a career record of 279-286 (.494). His best season came in 1984 when Iowa won a school record 21 matches and two Hawkeyes earned all-Big Ten honors. Four of Houghton’s athletes have also been selected Big Ten Sportsman of the Year. He became the winningest coach in Iowa tennis history in 1992 and is a member of the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame. While playing at Iowa, Houghton had a career winning percentage of .727 (40-15), the second best in Iowa History.
