Iowa Returns From Black and Gold Classic

March 4, 2008

DALLAS, TX – The University of Iowa men’s golf team traveled to Dallas, TX, this past weekend to compete in the first annual Black and Gold Alumni Classic. The inaugural event was hosted by U of Iowa alumni Three Carpenter (G.M. of Dallas C.C., Kevin Johnson (2002 letterman) and Scott Carpenter (1993-96 letterman).

The Hawkeyes used the weekend to practice and compete at three top golf courses in the Dallas area, Dallas Country Club, Gentle Creek Golf Club and Texas Star Golf Club. With practice rounds on Friday and alumni competition on Saturday, the team enjoyed a full weekend of quality golf.

The venues featured Dallas C.C., founded in 1896 as the second oldest country club west of the Mississippi, Gentle Creek G.C., a highly ranked D.A. Weibring design in northern Dallas and Texas Star, formerly the top ranked public course in Texas.

Six current players competed for the Hawkeyes. Seniors Todd Larson, Dan Holterhaus and Adam Miller competed alongside junior Cole Peevler and freshmen Dusty Koth and Vince India at the event. The match ended in a draw as both teams fought breezy conditions to post team scores of (-4) total.

Coach Hankins could not say enough about the inaugural Black and Gold Classic.

“The golf match was secondary to the mission of the Black and Gold Classic. Our current guys had the opportunity to spend quality time with our alumni and generous golf team supporters,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “All of this in an environment where the team can practice in good weather and prepare through competition for the spring season.”

“The golf courses and hospitality were second to none and our players truly enjoyed the experience. Three, Scott and Kevin were wonderful hosts and our team will look forward to the growth of this event in the future.”

The Hawkeyes compete next at the National Invitational Tournament, March 23-25, hosted by the University of Arizona at Tucson National G.C. in Tucson, AZ. The 13-team field includes five teams rated in the top 50 by Golfweek (Arizona, No. 33 Arizona State, Notre Dame, No. 39 Kent State, New Mexico, Houston, No. 28 Pepperdine, No. 48 TCU, UTEP, Tulsa, Sam Houston State, Virginia and No. 22 UNLV).
