FORT COLLINS, CO–The No. 38 Iowa Women’s Tennis team continued its winning streak on the road Friday evening, defeating Colorado State 5-2. The Hawkeyes are now 8-0 this season, and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Iowa is off to its best start in 14 seasons and currently leads the Big Ten, ahead of No. 1 Northwestern with an 11-1 overall record this season, 2-0 in the Big Ten.
Iowa dominated the doubles competition Friday night, going 3-0 and earning the doubles point to start the match. At the number one position, Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr defeated Colorado State’s Lauren Strasburger and Hilary Tyler 8-5. Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen kept up the momentum against Laura Neal and Anette Pohjalainen, and came out on top with an 8-3 win. Wrapping up doubles at the number three position, Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei claimed a solid 8-4 victory over Sarah Seltsam and Kirsten Stople. With the doubles win, Berry and Poggensee-Wei improved their doubles record to 7-0, and the Hawkeyes improved their overall doubles record to 21-4.
Heading into singles competition with a 1-0 lead, Iowa buckled down and claimed victories at the one, two, four, and five positions. Leading Iowa at the number one spot, Lee defeated Strasburger 6-4, 6-1. Veselinovic remains undefeated in singles play with an 8-0 record after a close 7-6(8), 7-5 victory over Tyler. Beelen fell to Neal in a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 loss but Dorr fought back to earn another singles point for Iowa, defeating Pohjalainen 7-6, 0-6, 6-2. At the number five position, Kelcie Klockgena played a strong match, earning the point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Greer Satherlie, while Poggensee-Wei fell after an intense match, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0(8) to Caitlin Fluegge.
“The girls played pretty well,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “We overcame some adversity and got the job done. It’s pretty exciting to keep the streak alive. We’re looking forward to a big challenge against Denver on Sunday.”
Iowa continues competition this weekend, traveling to Denver, CO on Sunday. The No. 38 Hawkeyes will face the 24th ranked Denver Pioneers in their first match against a higher ranked opponent this season. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. CST at the Benjamin F. Stapleton Jr. Tennis Pavilion.
