SPRINGFIELD, MO – – The Hawkeye baseball team dropped the first game of the Sunday doubleheader to the Missouri Bears at Hammons Field, 8-3.
Kevin Hoef led the Hawkeyes going 2-for-3, scoring all three runs. Justin Toole and Kyle Riffel both went 1-for-2 for the Black and Gold.
Michael Jacobs (1-2) got the Iowa loss. He pitched three innings, giving up six runs on six hits. Steve Turnbull provided relief for the Hawkeyes, pitching three innings and allowing only two runs on four hits and striking out three. For the Bears, Budd Baumann pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on five hits and sticking out nine.
The Hawkeyes scored first in the top of the first inning. It started with a leadoff hit-by-pitch from Hoef, followed by a Toole sac bunt to the pitcher to move him to second. Caleb Curry then singled through the left side to score Hoef to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead.
The Bears struck back in the bottom of the second, scoring two. The inning featured a Ryan Mantle RBI double to right center and a Dallas Hord single to right field, making it 2-1.
Iowa tied it up in the third when Hoef reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Toole then singled through the right side to advance Hoef. After a Baumann wild pitch, Toole and Hoef moved over, making runners on second and third for Justin Brauer. Brauer was walked followed by an RBI walk for Tyson Blaser, tying the contest 2-2.
However, a big fourth inning for the Bears made it a 6-2 game and the Hawkeyes unable to reclaim the lead.
Iowa scored its third and final run in the fifth. Hoef started the frame with an infield single. He advanced to second on a balk, and was moved to third on a Toole fly out to right field. Brauer received an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center, to make the score 7-3.
