Tulsa Comeback Silences Iowa

March 18, 2008

Box Score

DeLand, FL – Tulsa scored four unanswered runs for a 4-2, comeback win over Iowa Tuesday in DeLand, FL. Iowa jumped out to an early lead, but couldn’t hold off the Golden Hurricane.

Senior Emily Nichols gave the Hawkeyes an early spark with a two-run home run in the first inning. Junior Colleen McGlaughlin drew a two-out walk and Nichols sent the next pitch out of the park just to the left of the scoreboard in center field for an early 2-0 lead.

Tulsa cut the Iowa lead in half with a solo home run from Brooke Smart in the top of the second inning and tied the game in the sixth with an RBI double by Kelly Chapman. Later in the sixth inning, Tulsa’s Kailey Yarmer smacked an RBI double down the left field line that just glanced off senior third baseman Summer Downs’ to take a 3-2 lead.

Iowa had a chance to plate a run in the bottom of the sixth, but left the bases loaded. Freshman Chelsey Carmody started the frame with a single and moved to second off a Rachel West sacrifice bunt. McGlaughlin then hit a sharp ground ball to the Tulsa shortstop, who double-clutched on the throw, allowing McGlaughlin to reach safely. Later in the inning, sophomore Katie Brown walked to load the bases with two outs, but a groundout ended the Hawkeye threat.

The Hawkeyes could not plate a run in the bottom of the seventh to fall to 18-7 on the season.

Iowa will face Stetson at approximately 4:15 p.m. (CDT) Tuesday.
