IOWA CITY, IA – The 52nd-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to Minnesota 4-3, Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes are now 9-7 overall and 1-4 in Big Ten play on the season.
The Gophers claimed the doubles point, taking two of three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the 40th-ranked duo of seniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated Gallego/Bilankov 8-7 (7-3). Sophomores Reinoud Haal and Walker Grimes teamed up at the No. 2 position. The pair fell to Pham/Wernet 8-4. In addition, juniors Greg Holm and Christian Bierich were defeated by Dumas/Schwark, 8-3.
Iowa was able to claim three singles matches on the day. In a battle of two nationally ranked singles players, #69 Bart van Monsjou fell to #88 Raoul Schwark 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. J.P. Ritchie fell to Tobias Wernet 7-6 (6), 6-2 at the No. 2 position. At No. 3 singles, junior Christian Bierich defeated Sebastian Gallego 6-4, 6-3. Reinoud Haal defeated Dino Bilankov in the No. 4 position, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Sophomore Tommy McGeorge fell at No. 5 singles to Chi-Lang Pham, 6-2, 6-4. Additionally, junior Greg Holm continued his strong play at the No. 6 position. Holm dominated Pierre Dumas 6-1, 6-1.
“This is a match I felt we should have won, but we did not step up,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
The Hawkeyes host 70th-ranked Michigan State Sunday. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
