EAST LANSING, MI —The 46th-ranked Iowa Women’s tennis team suffered a heartbreaking loss today, falling 4-3 to No. 71 Michigan State. The Hawkeyes lost the doubles point after three close doubles matches and split singles competition 3-3. Iowa is now 11-6 this season, 2-4 in Big Ten play.
The doubles competition proved to be a battle between the Big Ten opponents, with the point being decided in the last doubles match. Michigan State claimed the first doubles match, with the duo of Christine Bader and Whitney Wilson defeating Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr at the number one spot 8-6. Iowa answered with an 8-5 victory from Mili Veselinovic and Kelcie Klockenga at the number two position and the doubles point came down to the last match at the number three doubles spot. Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Kayla Berry fell 8-6 to Stephanie Kebler and Lindsey Lonergan, giving the Hawkeyes a 1-2 record for doubles play.
In singles action, Michigan State entered with a 1-0 lead over Iowa, but the Hawkeyes did not give up without a fight. Iowa won three of it six singles matches today, coming from behind to pull within one point of the Spartans. After losses at the fourth and fifth positions, the Hawkeyes claimed their first point of the match when Dorr defeated Manon Noe 7-5, 6-0 at the number three spot. Lee fell to No. 113 Christine Bader 7-5, 6-3 at the number one position to decide the match but Iowa claimed the last two singles matches to end the match. Veselinovic defeated Kebler at the number two singles position in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. Berry ended the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Wilson to bring the final score to 4-3.
Iowa returns home this weekend to host Northwestern and Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes will face top-ranked Northwestern Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Iowa hosts Wisconsin Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
