April 15, 2008

IOWA CITY-
The V8+ boat of the University of Iowa women’s rowing team was named Big Ten Boat of the Week Tuesday, after an outstanding performance at the 21st annual George Washington Invitational.

Iowa tallied wins over four different opponents last weekend, going three for three in competition. The Hawkeye crew won its Friday race over host George Washington (7:04.4) with a time of 6:43.9. Saturday brought two more wins on the chilly Potomac River. The first over Georgetown in the morning session (6:27.3- 6:37.9), and beating both Navy (6:21.7) and Saint Joseph’s (6:36.4) in the afternoon session, with a final time of 6:19.1, which was their best time of the weekend.

The lineup of the winning boat consisted of: Coxwain and junior Sheila Shedden, junior Laura Kanaris, junior Kristin Kelly, junior Hannah Miller, sophomore Romy Post, junior Katelyn Davy-Traynor, sophomore Megan Erickson, freshman Clara Francois and senior Brittany Keyes.

“It’s good to see the efforts of this crew become recognized,” said Hawkeye Head Coach Mandi Kowal. “They had a solid weekend of racing which one can see by the results. We aren’t where we want to be yet as a team but this is definitely a nice change in the right direction. The team is excited, hungry and eager to keep advancing. Being boat of the week provides a bit more motivation to get faster.”

This was the first weekly honor from the Big Ten office for the Hawkeyes this season. The Hawkeyes received this same honor last season after an impressive showing in the George Washington Invitational April 6-7.

Iowa returns to the water April 19, traveling to Columbus, OH, to take on Big Ten opponents Ohio State and Indiana.
