Long Ball Sinks Iowa In Game Two

April 27, 2008

Box Score

Bloomington, IN – Indiana once again scored all three runs off a home run, this time in the sixth inning, to record a two-game sweep over No. 25 Iowa, 3-2. The Hawkeyes led the game, 2-0, heading into the sixth before giving up their lead.

“Indiana didn’t get a lot of hits, but they made them count,” Head Coach Gayle Blevins said. “You can’t give a team extra at-bats and Indiana took advantage.”

Iowa took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back singles by freshman Chelsey Carmody and sophomore Taylor Leichsenring put runners on first and second with one out. Senior Summer Downs then smacked a single to left field and a hustling Carmody slid safely into home for the first run of the contest.

The Hawkeyes doubled their lead in the top of the sixth off an RBI single. Junior Colleen McGlaughlin drew a leadoff walk and was replaced at first by junior Rachel West. Junior Erin Riemersma sacrificed West to second and junior Katie Brown drove her in with a single up the middle.

Indiana took advantage of a Hawkeye error to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs in the frame, Emily Bergeson singled and a Hawkeye error off a ground ball by Sara Olsen kept the inning alive. Tory Yamaguchi followed with a three-run home run to right field that gave the Hoosiers a 3-2 lead.

Iowa couldn’t plate the tying run in the top of the seventh, as game one starter Sara Olsen sat the Hawkeyes down in order for her first save of the season.

Carmody finished 3-4 with a run scored while four other Hawkeyes had a hit.

Sophomore Amanda Zust tossed six innings in the loss. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and gave up three total hits. Zust struck out three and walked three.

The Hawkeyes will host Western Illinois in their final regular season home game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
